Nail polish is one of the worst things to spill on carpeting. Thankfully there are some handy household items that make cleaning up less of a chore; chances are you already have most of them under your counter! One important thing to remember is to never try these without first testing them on another portion of less-seen carpet to ensure they will not bleach/discolor your carpet. Never scrub at a stain, always dab or blot, making it less likely to set further in the carpet.

Nail Polish Remover (Non-Acetone based) -

• Nail polish remover is something you probably already have if you're painting your nails. In order to remove the polish before it becomes a stain: simply pour a little nail polish remover onto a clean dish rag or paper towel and blot/dab at the nail polish.

• Continue dabbing, consistently folding the rag/towel so as not to dab more on, until the stain is gone.

• Rinse by dabbing the area with cold water in a clean cloth.

Window Cleaner -

• Window cleaner is another household item that can be easily used to remove nail polish from a carpet or rug. With window cleaner you will want to spray directly upon the stain, and let it sit for about ten (10) seconds.

• After allowing it to sit you will want to take a clean paper towel or wash rag and dab at the stain until it disappears.

• Rinse by dabbing the area with cold water in a clean cloth.

Hair Spray –

• Hair spray is another alternative to clean nail polish out of carpeting. You will want to keep the area moist by adding a little warm water.

• Then spray the stain for about ten to fifteen seconds and let sit.

• Dab the nail polish until gone!

• Rinse by blotting/dabbing the area with cold water in a clean cloth.

Rubbing Alcohol –

• Rubbing alcohol has similar chemicals that nail polish remover has, so it has pretty much the same effect.

• Simply pour a little onto a cloth or directly onto the stain and then blot/dab until it disappears!

• Rinse the area by dabbing with cold water in a clean cloth.

Hydrogen Peroxide –

• Hydrogen peroxide is not recommended for anything other than white or very light carpeting as it does have a slight bleaching effect.

• Simply pour a little onto a cloth or paper towel.

• Dab at the affected area.

• Rinse by dabbing with cold water in a clean cloth.

If the stain has already dried it can be more difficult to clean. In that case:

• Soak the area with warm water to loosen the nail polish.

• After the area becomes moist again, use nail polish remover and/or rubbing alcohol and soak the area.

• Scrub with toothbrush, attempting to go bottom to top. We want to try to peel the polish off the strands of carpet/rug. This is one of the few times where scrubbing is recommended!

• Repeat until the stain is gone.

• When you get the stain off, rinse by blotting with a rag and cold water. Vacuum to make sure that all of it is out.

Your carpet should look like new!

Top Carpet Steam Cleaning Sydney Australia

We've all experienced it at some point or another: smelly odors coming from the carpeting in our home. These can come as the result of a spill, pets, even carpeting that has been in the house for years. But, not to worry - there are a number of techniques that you can utilize in tackling these annoying odors. Here are a few examples that you can make note of. The best thing to do is to hire a good Carpet Cleaning Company.

*GENERAL ODORS

Perhaps the most common method used to get rid of carpet odors is that of a carpet cleaner of your choosing. There are many that are available for purchase at your local supermarket, but one useful tip to consider is to only select one that specifically deals with eliminating carpet odors. This way, you will not only get exactly what you need, but you can save money as well.

With carpet cleaners, you can either treat a specific area or, if you wish, the entire carpet. Be sure to follow all listed directions explicitly in order to obtain the cleaner's full effect. For example, most carpet cleaners should be applied and left alone for approximately 15 minutes (sometimes longer) before being vacuumed up with a vacuum cleaner (for power-based cleaners) or a steam cleaner (for liquid-based cleaners). *TOBACCO ODORS

Another useful tip for carpet odor removal is to use baking soda to get rid of tobacco odors. To get the full effect of this, simply sprinkle the baking soda generously over the affected area and allow it to sit overnight. The next day, use a vacuum cleaner to clean it up, emptying it or changing the bags along the way if needed. Following this, you will want to use a steam cleaner of any kind filled with distilled vinegar on the affected area. Distilled vinegar is a natural and effective acidic cleaner.

*MOLD ODORS

Using a wet-dry vacuum is essential for removing any and all odors of mold that may be coming from your carpet as the result of a water leak in your home or water seeping in from outside of your home, especially if your basement is carpeted.

For this method, simply use a wet/dry vacuum on the affected area to suck up any liquid. During this process, you will have to continuously stop and empty the vacuum, as the liquid can sometimes fill up rather quickly. Once this is finished, you can do one of two things next. You can use a humidifier to help get rid of the odors or apply a solution of water, distilled white vinegar, and baking soda. This is generally two cups of water, 1/2 cup baking soda, and 2 cups of the vinegar. Lightly scrub it in and vacuum it up with the wet/dry vacuum.

Continue to use a humidifier to get rid of the odors. If you do not own one, simply open a window or two in the room to allow the odors to escape.

*PET URINE ODORS

Oftentimes, pets will have "potty accidents" in the home in which they urinate on the floor. However, there is a simple way to deal with these kinds of odors as well.

If you find that your pet has urinated on your carpet, immediately place a paper towel over the area. With the paper towel down, stand on it for about a minute to help the stain get soaked up. Once this is done, proceed to rinse the area with cold or cool water, whichever you prefer. Both will work equally well. Then, using a wet/dry vacuum, gradually vacuum up the liquid in the area until it is mostly dry.

*CARPET REPLACEMENT

You may also detect odors from your carpet, and carpet cleaners may not be helping to get rid of them. If so, you will likely need to consider replacing your entire carpet. If this is something that you suspect, contact your local carpet cleaning company to come inspect your carpet.

Stretching The Carpet

Stretching the carpet can sometimes be done to replace small sections of carpet. Oftentimes it's the solution to gettings out wrinkles and waves that are in it. Loose carpet will only appear worse as time goes on. A special device is used to stretch carpet out and help it to last longer. Stretching the carpet can also straighten out large bulges so that they are no longer a problem that others might trip over.

Carpet Patching

Carpet patching is the common remedy for stains, tears and holes. The damaged area is cut out and then replaced. Usually, the carpet repair specialist will ask you for left over scrap carpet so a patch can be made from it. If you don't have any leftover pieces of carpet, you might have to have a small area of carpet taken out of the closet floor or from the floor of another area that's not usually seen.  Here's a great article for additional info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpet

Flood Damaged Carpet

Carpet that has been badly saturated by water can take a very long time to dry. It's far better to have a professional come in so it can be dried much more quickly. Otherwise mildew can set in. A professional will pull backed the carpet and get to the padding underneath. Powerful blowers and fans are often used to dry the carpet and padding as quickly as possible. Then you'll only have to pay for labor rather than also paying to have new carpet installed.

Remodeling

Taking down walls will leave new areas that need to be covered by carpet. Scrap carpet or carpet that has been taken from lesser seen areas can save you thousands of dollars. No new carpet needs to be purchased. The new floor space can be made to appear like the rest of the floor.
